A dee shackle — also called a D shackle or chain shackle — has a narrow, straight-sided bow shaped like the letter D. The load travels in a straight line through the pin, making it ideal for single in-line connections such as chain-to-hook, sling eye-to-padeye, or a single-leg rigging assembly. It is not designed for multi-leg or side-loaded connections.

Use a dee shackle when the load stays in-line and only one fitting connects to the pin — typical for chain blocks, single-leg pulls and towing. Choose a bow shackle when multiple sling legs share one pin or the load may angle — the wider bow reduces pin crowding and side-loading risk. When in doubt for multi-leg lifts, use a bow shackle.

WLL (working load limit) is the maximum load the shackle is rated to carry in normal service. It is stamped on the shackle body and must remain legible before every lift. Never exceed the stamped WLL — proof load is typically about 2× WLL and minimum break load about 6× WLL on commercial forged shackles, giving a built-in safety margin when used correctly.

Screw pin dee shackles use a threaded pin you hand-tighten — quick to fit for temporary rigging, chain blocks and site lifts. Bolt-type (nut-and-bolt) shackles add a secure nut and often a cotter pin for semi-permanent connections where vibration could loosen a screw pin.
